How to Make a Beneficial Sea Moss Tea
There are many ways to reap the benefits of Irish Sea Moss. You can drink it, eat it, and even apply it to your skin – depending on your body’s goals or needs.
Should you choose to ingest it, one of the most popular ways to do so is to drink cups of hot sea moss tea. Although sea moss alone is not highly regarded for its taste, we have a healthy recipe that blends the moss with spices and tea leaves.
Keep reading to learn more about the nutrients and minerals found in Irish Sea Moss, as well as how these components can improve everything from your joints to your complexion.
First Things First: What Is Irish Sea Moss?
Before we dive into our healthy drink recipe, we want to give you a brief overview of sea moss and how it has been used throughout history.
For more than 2,000 years, people have harvested Irish Sea Moss from the coasts of North America, Europe, and the Caribbean. It’s a “red micro-algae,” and it has been used to treat everything from the common cold to aches and pains.
It’s been discovered that sea moss contains a whopping 92 out of the 102 minerals that our bodies need to thrive, including iodine, iron, zinc, and more. Incorporating it into your diet can help reduce inflammation, rid your body of excess mucus, and improve your respiratory and digestive tracts.
At Freshly Rooted Tribe, we provide organic, sustainably sourced sea moss in the form of gels, sun-dried pieces, and soaps.
If you’re looking for a way to drink the benefits of sea moss, check out our Soursoup Tea – a blend of organic tea leaves that give a smooth, subtle taste. You can add sea moss to this already beneficial tea to create a strong, immune-boosting drink.
Although you’re welcome to try our premade tea to boost your immunity and experience a wide range of health benefits, we also want you to be able to make your own! Keep reading to learn how you can do just that.
How to Make a Tasty Sea Moss Tea
To make your own tea at home, you’ll need to start by boiling filtered water. Then, take Irish Sea Moss gel and add approximately one part gel to four parts of this filtered hot water.
Allow this mixture to steep for eight to ten minutes. If you want your tea to taste a little stronger, simmer the mixture for longer – up to 30 minutes or so.
Although you could drink this tea as so, we highly recommend adding other nutritional ingredients to improve taste and experience more benefits. You can start by experimenting with:
- Milk (dairy or non-dairy)
- Coconut cream
- Honey
- Sugar (natural or artificial)
- Nutmeg
- Cinnamon
- Vanilla
- Ginger
- Various tea leaves
How you blend and mix flavors is entirely up to your preference. Begin with a relatively simple mixture, then learn to get creative and play on your favorite spices and tea leaves.

If you find you enjoy brewing and experimenting with sea moss tea, don’t stop there – expand beyond warm drinks for immune health. You can also add red algae to drinks on ice and smoothies. If you can drink it, you can likely add sea moss to it for additional health benefits.
What Kind of Irish Sea Moss Should You Use?
There are various types of sea moss on the market. Predominantly, you’ll find “gels” or “dried” products – and both can be used to create teas, as well as other drinks.
Sea moss gel is soaked sea moss that’s blended with water to achieve a gelatinous consistency. Dried sea moss is not blended with water, but can be converted into a gel or other forms, such as powder.
At Freshly Rooted Tribe, we typically use our moss gel to create teas and other drink mixtures, but you are also welcome to try using powdered sea moss or dried sea moss.
Using sea moss gel will give your drinks a thicker consistency – which some people enjoy. However, if you want a more subtle experience, you can blend dried sea moss with tea leaves and simply add water.
The Benefits of Ingesting Sea Moss
We already briefly touched on the benefits of drinking or eating sea moss, but let’s go a little deeper while you’re here.
Sea moss has a high level of potassium chloride, which reduces inflammation in your body, including in your stomach, joints, and lungs. Many people with arthritis or other inflammation problems drink sea moss tea to reduce discomfort.
Sea moss, in any form, can also:
- Boost your energy levels with its high levels of iron
- Promote natural weight loss by speeding up your metabolism
- Build body muscle with its high levels of protein
Because sea moss contains roughly 90 percent of the nutrients our bodies naturally require, many refer to the ingredient as a “powerhouse” health food. Ingesting the algae, as a tea or in another form, can give your body a huge boost in a variety of minerals and vitamins, including:
- Phosphorus
- Calcium
- Manganese
- Sulfur
- Magnesium
- Vitamins B and C
- Beta-carotene
Still, the biggest reason we see people turn to sea moss products is for their immune system strengthening qualities. Now, more than ever, people are looking for ways to protect their bodies from viruses and bacteria, as well as old age and chronic discomfort.
Sea moss can serve as a powerful supplement if you want to fight all of these concerns. In some cases, red algae can relieve cold and flu-like symptoms – especially in its powder form.
So, the next time you have a fever and chill, consider brewing yourself a hot cup of sea moss tea. Although it’s not a cure for viruses and common colds, the moss’s immunity-boosting qualities can help you overcome your illness quickly.
